New Allen Street Substation Complete

Maquoketa Municipal Electric Utility recently completed construction of its new Allen Street substation.  The two million dollar project was necessitated due to the impending voltage upgrade from 34,500 volts to 69,000 volts on the transmission line owned by ITC Holdings Corp. that provides power to the substation.  Of the three substations owned and operated by MMEU, just the Allen Street location was unable to handle the higher voltage and therefore needed to be upgraded.  For several years, ITC Holdings Corp. has indicated they will be upping the transmission line voltage to 69,000 volts sometime around 2020.  By upgrading the Allen Street substation now, MMEU has ensured that its customers will continue to have multiple transmission lines feeding its distribution system and minimizing risks.   “Reliability and costs are two of our customers’ top priorities,” commented Chris Krogman, MMEU General Manager.  “By carefully budgeting for this upgrade over the last several years, we were able to pay for this project without needing to raise our rates.  Now that Allen Street substation is ready for the switchover by ITC, our reliability will continue to be very high.”
